Why the TRAK makes specific sense for Texas

Coastal conditions require real performance
Galveston Bay is not forgiving. It's shallow, wind-exposed, and the chop builds faster than people expect. I've paddled the TRAK in 15-knot winds on the bay and the hull tracked well, edged cleanly when I needed it to turn, and didn't feel like I was fighting the boat. Assembly and setup: what it's actually like
The assembly process is one of the most common questions I get at demo sessions. People want to know if it's complicated, if something can go wrong, and whether they'll be doing it on a muddy bank under pressure.
Here's the honest breakdown:
The connections are positive-locking — you feel and hear when each piece seats correctly. I've assembled this boat in a parking lot, on a boat ramp at Buffalo Bayou, and at Armand Bayou's nature preserve. I've never had a connection fail or feel uncertain on the water.
Pack-down is faster than assembly. Once you've done it a few times, you're broken down and bagged in under 15 minutes. I typically rinse the skin while it dries, pack the frame, and I'm driving home in 20 minutes from when I pulled the boat out of the water.
On-water performance
Tracking and speed
On flatwater — Buffalo Bayou, Lake Conroe, Armand Bayou — the TRAK tracks as well as any composite sea kayak I've paddled. The hull is 16 feet and narrow at 21.5 inches. It wants to go straight, holds momentum well, and responds to sweep strokes and edging cleanly. There's no flex or wobble that reminds you it's a folding boat. The frame is that stiff.
Stability
Primary stability is lower than a wide recreational kayak — this is a sea kayak, not a sit-on-top. If you're coming from a wide recreational boat, expect 2–3 sessions to adjust. Secondary stability (how the boat catches you when you edge) is excellent. I've edged the TRAK aggressively and it never surprised me. Most paddlers with any touring kayak experience are comfortable within a session.
Wind and coastal conditions
This is where the adjustable rocker proves its value. With rocker increased for Galveston Bay conditions, the boat is more maneuverable and responsive to paddle correction in quartering seas. Flat rocker gives you a more efficient straight-line hull for calm water covering distance. Having both in one boat on one trip is something no hardshell can offer.
The skin
The polyurethane-coated nylon skin is tougher than it looks. I've scraped it on concrete boat ramps and limestone river banks. After 16 months of regular use it shows wear marks — not damage. TRAK offers replacement skins, which is a consideration worth factoring into the long-term cost, though I haven't needed one yet.

If you have a garage, a roof rack, and paddle from one consistent location — a quality hardshell composite kayak at a similar price point may give you marginally more performance for your specific conditions.
